Medlicott of Dunmurry

Introduction

Helen Mackensie Medlicott was born in Dunmurry in the 19th century and produced this account of her family history in 1939. Besides describing the Medlicott family tree she also describes the Rose family tree from which her mother was descended. Her source of reference for the latter is the book entitled "The family of Kilravock 1290 - 1847, which describes family links with May Queen of Scots and Bonny Prince Charlie. The Dunmurry Medlicott lineage is based on the earlier 1900 Centenary Edition of Burke's Landed Gentry which places James Medlicott of Ardscull at a different (and most likely eroneous) position in the Dunmurry family tree compared to that described in “The Familiy of Medlicott”, prepared by Henry Edmonstone Medlicott and his son in 1938, and which was reproduced in the Burke's Irish Family Record, published in 1973. There are 3 sections in the original account and a “Supplement” added in 1985: 1. Lineage 2. Reminiscences told to her by her father James Edward Medlicott (1827 - 1913) 3. The Rose Family
